Across Australia, we are seeing a dangerous surge in government attempts to restrict free speech, under the guise of ‘protecting society from misinformation, harmful content, or hate speech’.
Whether it’s the Misinformation and Disinformation Bill (MAD Bill), the newly passed Under-16 Social Media Bill, or the looming threat of Victoria’s Anti-Vilification Laws, these laws represent a direct assault on the rights of Australians to speak freely, challenge authority, and express themselves openly.
1. The Misinformation and Disinformation Bill (MAD Bill)
The Misinformation and Disinformation Bill, a federal proposal, was one of the most concerning attempts at silencing free speech in Australia. While the bill claimed to target the spread of false information, its vagueness posed a severe threat to free expression. The bill gives the government sweeping powers to regulate and censor content across online platforms, without clear guidelines or checks on abuse.
The risk here is not just in combating misinformation, but in silencing legitimate debate and stifling dissenting views. With the potential to target individuals, organisations, and media outlets that challenge official narratives, this bill represented a government-backed move to control what Australians can say, read, and discuss. This is not the path to truth—it’s the path to state-sanctioned censorship.
It’s attempt at passing also had one of the most rushed, hastily consultation period of any bill in recent memory.

2. The Under-16 Social Media Bill
While the Under-16 Social Media Bill has now passed, its implications are far-reaching. The bill’s aim is to restrict access and use of social media platforms for children under the age of 16, ostensibly to protect them from harmful content online. However, in practice, it extends government control over what young Australians can access and say on social media.
This bill is simply not designed to protect children—it risks shutting down their voices and access to information outside of public schooling systems. – which are inherently biased.
The internet is one of the few spaces where young people can freely express themselves and learn about ideas & ideologies, organise around causes, and have a platform for civic engagement. By imposing such strict limitations, the bill harms youth empowerment and silences the next generation of activists and leaders.
Event the Human Rights Commission was against it; citing that it went against ratified agreements in place with the United Nations covenants.

3. Victoria’s Anti-Vilification Laws
Victoria’s Anti-Vilification Laws, currently under consideration, represent the most egregious attacks on free speech at the state level. These laws aim to prevent hate speech, but their broad and vague definitions could result in the criminalisation of opinions, discussions, and debates that do not fit within narrow, government-approved narratives.
The potential for these laws to silence individuals or groups based on subjective interpretations of what is “vilifying” is alarming. The definitions are so expansive that any speech deemed offensive—whether it’s a strong political opinion, a challenging perspective on culture, or a critique of government policies—could be prosecuted. These laws represent a dangerous step toward censorship, as they make it easier to suppress speech that challenges the status quo or that might offend ‘certain’ groups.
The legislation is horrendously written and vague as is often the case with bills that intend to restrict our ability to speak freely.

A United Front Against Overreach
These bills and laws represent a coordinated attack on free speech from both state and federal governments. The MAD Bill attempted to control online discourse, the Under-16 Social Media Bill silences and programs our youth, and Victoria’s Anti-Vilification Laws threaten to criminalise speech that challenges prevailing views.
Where does it stop? The truth is, it won’t unless we act. If these laws are allowed to pass, they will only embolden and provide growing momentum to governments to further restrict our ability to speak freely.
Each of these bills represents a step toward a future where government overreach dominates public discourse, where individuals face legal consequences for expressing opinions, and where ideas are stifled under the weight of political correctness.
Australians must unite to push back against this tide of censorship. These laws will not just affect one group or one side of the political spectrum—they will affect us all. We cannot allow the government to continue pushing through laws that undermine our fundamental rights.
Taking Action
The time to act is now. We must take a stand against any further attempts at implementing the MAD Bill, the Under-16 Social Media Bill, and Victoria’s Anti-Vilification Laws. Whether it’s writing to MPs, rallying in support of free speech, or raising awareness on social media (which we do here), we must make our voices heard.
Australians must demand that our government uphold the right to free expression, protect the next generation’s ability to speak up, and ensure that we are not silenced by vague laws designed to control what we say, think, and do.
The fight for free speech is not just a political issue—it’s a matter of defending political discourse in this country. It’s time to take action against this overreach before it’s too late.
